The Dougherty County Elementary Physical Education Curriculum is based on the Quality Core Curriculum (QCC) Objectives for Health and Physical Education.

 

Kindergarten

All Kindergarten students are scheduled for 30 minute physical education classes twice a week.

 

Classroom rules and safety practices (self-management), general/personal space, following directions, transfer weight in various levels, pathways, directions, shares equipment with others.

 

Locomotor movement (walking, running, hopping, skipping, galloping, leaping).  Nonlocomotor movement (bending, twisting, stretching, swaying, rising, collapsing).

 

Manipulative skills of throwing, kicking, catching and striking.

 

Fitness activities that address health related concepts (flexibility, body composition, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance) are integrated into the lessons when appropriate.

 

Rhythmic movements, timing, following a beat.

 

 

First Grade

All First Grade students are scheduled for 30 minutes physical education classes daily.

 

Classroom rules and safety practices (self-management), shares space and equipment with others takes turns, following directions, spatial awareness, changing directions, levels, pathways  in general/personal space, individuals, groups when moving over, under, alongside, behind, leading and following.

 

Improving locomotor movement (walking, running, hopping, skipping, galloping, leaping).  Improving nonlocomotor movement (bending, twisting, stretching, swaying, rising, collapsing).

 

Manipulative skills of throwing, kicking, catching and striking.

 

Physical Best Test, identify physiological signs of physical activity (heart rate and breathing), knowledge of health related fitness concepts.  These concepts are integrated into lessons where appropriate and become increasingly complex with each grade level.  Fitness activities.

 

Rhythmic movements, and spatial compositions.

 

 

Second Grade

All Second Grade students are scheduled for 30 minutes physical education classes daily.

 

 

Classroom rules and safety practices (self-management), exhibit appropriate behavior when participating with others.

 

Mature locomotor and nonlocomotor skills, appropriate equipment usage, applies concept of weight transfer in a variety of ways.

 

Improving manipulative skills (kicking, dribbling (hand/feet), catching, striking, throwing (under/over hand).  Select and use appropriate equipment for various activities.

 

Perform simple rhythmic and spatial compositions, design and perform simple sequences that focus on changes in directions, levels, pathways.  Knowledge of the body’s relationship to objects, individuals, and others-spatial relationships.

 

Perform simple stunts, tumbling and balancing.

 

Physical Best Test, identify changes in the body during and as a result of vigorous activity, as well as fitness activities.

 

 

 

 

Third Grade

All Third Grade students are scheduled for 30 minutes physical education classes daily.

 

 

Classroom rules and safety practices (self-management), demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior in a physical setting, follows activity specific rules, works alone, and with a partner or group.

 

Perform locomotor and/or nonlocomotor skills with our without equipment.

 

Improving and refining manipulative skills (catching, striking, throwing, punting, dribbling).

 

Sequential stunts, tumbling, and balancing patterns.

 

Create and perform rhythmic activities.

 

Physical Best Test (pre/post test) fitness activities, aerobic appropriate for age group, identify one activity relating to each of the health related fitness components.

 

 

Fourth Grade

All Fourth Grade students are scheduled for 30 minutes physical education classes daily.

 

 

Classroom rules and safety practices (self-management), demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior in physical settings, follows activity-specific rules.

 

Ability to combine locomotor and nonlocomotor skills, into repetitive patterns with or without equipment.

 

Improving manipulative skills (kicking, dribbling (hand/feet), catching, striking, throwing (under/over hand).  Select and use appropriate equipment for various activities.

 

Beginning skills of a few specialized movement forms: sports, gymnastics, dance and fitness activities, improves performance in selected and fundamental skills.

 

Physical Best Test, (pre/post test), fitness activities, interprets results of fitness test.

 

Fifth Grade

All Fifth Grade students are scheduled for 30 minutes physical education classes daily.

 

 

Classroom rules and safety practices (self-management), demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior in physical settings, follows activity-specific rules.

 

Performance of all basic locomotor and nonlocomotor skills, manipulative, transfer of weight, spatial awareness and relationships.

 

Create complex rhythmic and aerobic activities, more advanced specialized skills, using sports skills, maintaining static/dynamic balance, performing gymnastics, transfer and movement skills, recognize similarities and differences between skills and transfers them from one to the other.

 

Physical Best Test, (pre/post test), fitness activities, selects and participates in activities to improve personal fitness, describe health benefits from regular physical activity.
